Dr. Cheryl Ann McCarthy, Doctor of Arts, Simmons College, MLIS University of Rhode Island

Dr. McCarthy has recently retired after a 45-year career in librarianship serving URI for 25 years as professor and Interim Dean of University Libraries and 20 years as a school librarian. As a Professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies in the Harrington School of Communication and Media and School of Education, she has received “national recognition” for the School Library Media Program. As a library leader, she has served as President of the New England Library Association and School Librarians of Rhode Island as well as on numerous local, regional and national boards and associations. Her research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals on the history of school library media programs, teaching online, information literacy instruction K-16, and assessment of learning commons in academic libraries. She has presented at local, regional, national and international conferences on teaching and learning in libraries. She has recently received the following awards and recognition: Professor Emerita by URI; “Top 50 Distinguished Alumni” by URI-GSLIS: “Sweetheart of the Year” for advocacy of library services by RI Coalition of Library Advocates; The Presidential Award by the School Librarians of Rhode Island for “Remarkable Contributions to the Library Profession;” and a Certificate of Accomplishment presented by Senator Jack Reed for “Dedicated Service and Leadership Advocating to Support School and Academic Libraries to Ensure Life-Long Learning.” Her scholarship and vision is solidly grounded in the human experience in libraries and she leads with passion from her heart.
